February - 2002

Special thanks to Ryan for arranging and doing the interview on my behalf and many thanks to Derek for taking time to answer these questions. This is the first of many I hope to do with Derek

1. You fought with Matt Johnson during Training Camp this year. What sparked it and how did it feel going against an established NHL heavyweight?

We were on the ice at the same time and we got tangled up so he said, "Let's go" so I just dropped my stuff. It felt good fighting an established heavyweight because it boosted my confidence for the upcoming season.

2. You had a very impressive rookie camp. A lot of fans here in Minnesota appreciate the physical style of game. Do you style yourself after anyone or are you making your own mold so to speak?

I am making my own mold because all tough guys in the show each have their own styles. I don't think any two heavyweights are the same and that's what makes each of them unique.

3. What have the Wild asked of you as far as your future with the team? Are there any plans for you to join the team after the junior season ends?

They told me to play rough and tough type of hockey but disciplined as well. I can't see me making the Wild next season because I will need to develop a bit more in the farm systems, hopefully Houston.

4. In my opinion, the WHL produced some of the toughest players that come out of the CHL. Who would you consider one of the toughest you have faced?

Stephen Peat was the toughest opponent I have faced in juniors so far.

5. Last question, you made it into ESPN's list of the 10 best hits in hockey from your glass breaking hit during the rookie tournament. How did your teammates react to you after getting back to the bench?

They all started to laugh when I went to the bench and said, "Good job".
